A sustainable alternative to the disposable coffee cup

Grounds Up, an innovative start-up focused on turning coffee waste into valuable, circular raw materials, approached design bureau Artori to develop a No Waste reusable coffee cup.

We already gave a sneak peek last year, and Grounds Up has since launched the coffee cup on the market under the name NaveRo — A Taste of No Waste.

For the development, the client defined a number of key requirements:

  • The coffee cup had to be reusable
  • The design needed to closely align with the vision envisioned by founder Lukas Van Quickelberghe
  • The material had to consist of upcycled coffee grounds
  • The cup had to be food-safe and hygienic
  • The cup needed to be customisable

A challenge right up Artori’s alley. Read on to discover how we approached this project.

The challenge

The biggest challenge was ensuring the financial feasibility of a coffee cup that also needed to be customisable. Our solution was to design an inner cup — onto which the lid fits — that is placed inside a customisable outer cup.

The advantages of this approach?

  • Only the mould of the outer cup needs to be adapted for personalisation
  • The cup can be fully disassembled for easy and hygienic cleaning
  • The inner cup and lid are made from virgin plastic, food-safe and required to comply with all food safety regulations
  • The outer cup is produced using upcycled coffee grounds

Prototyping

Tijdens het ontwerpproces maakten we prototypes via 3D printen om het gebruiksgemak te testen.

De focus lag op het gemak waarmee gedronken kon worden en of het klepje al dan niet stoorde tijdens het drinken.

FOT analysis

Once the first injection-moulded parts were delivered, the FOT analysis was initiated. For the NaveRo cup, achieving a proper seal was critical. This was tested by placing filled cups — with both hot and cold beverages — in various positions.

In addition, we verified whether the cup could be opened and closed smoothly, both when empty and when filled (hot and cold).

We also checked whether all components were moulded within the specified tolerances. Alongside dimensional checks, form and positional tolerances were measured. In this project, the roundness of the cup was especially crucial to guarantee a reliable seal.

Any necessary adjustments were discussed by Artori with the client and the manufacturer before final production was launched.

The result?

NaveRo — the reusable coffee cup for every conscious coffee lover!
